Find and normalize EPS

Start with diluted EPS from the income statement. Read the filing and footnotes: a one-time gain, loss, acquisition charge, or cyclical peak can make the latest year a poor base.

Write a growth path

Choose a first-year rate, a lower or equal final-year rate, and seven to ten years. The visible table makes the forecast concrete instead of hiding it inside one input.

Check the equivalent rate

The calculator compounds each year and finds the one constant annual rate that reaches the same ending EPS. That equivalent rate becomes g in Graham's formula.

Compare cases and continue

Read the lower, base, and higher-growth values together. If the conclusion changes easily, the assumption is doing more work than the business evidence; use the DCF next.

Intrinsic value meaning: an estimate, not a hidden market price

Intrinsic value is an estimate of what the economics of a business are worth, independent of today's quoted share price. There is no observable true number waiting to be discovered. Different cash-flow forecasts, interest rates, reinvestment assumptions, and risk judgments produce different estimates. Market price is what a share costs now; intrinsic value is the conclusion of a model.

Benjamin Graham: price, value, and a margin of safety

Graham's central discipline was to separate price from value and leave room for error. His growth-stock formula is a quick earnings-based cross-check: current EPS is multiplied by 8.5 plus twice the expected growth rate. The revised version also adjusts for the yield available on high-grade corporate bonds. It is useful because its assumptions are easy to see—and dangerous when a speculative growth rate makes the multiplier explode.

Adjusted Graham estimate = EPS × (8.5 + 2g) × 4.4 ÷ Y

EPS is current or normalized earnings per share; g is the equivalent annual percentage growth across your path, entered as a whole number; 4.4 is Graham's historical high-grade bond-yield constant; and Y is the current Aaa corporate bond yield.

Warren Buffett: the cash a business can distribute

Buffett credits Graham as his teacher, but Berkshire's published definition is not the Graham formula. Berkshire defines intrinsic value as the discounted value of cash that can be taken out of a business during its remaining life. It also says the calculation is an estimate that changes when interest rates or cash-flow forecasts change, and that two informed people can reasonably disagree.

How Graham and Buffett fit together

Graham supplies the discipline: demand a relationship between price and business value and allow for error. Buffett frames the business economically: estimate future distributable cash and discount it. This calculator uses Graham's shortcut to make the growth assumption visible; the DCF Calculator is the closer implementation of Buffett's definition.

Why forecasting growth over time matters

A company can grow quickly today and still mature. Competition, market saturation, capital requirements, and a larger starting base usually make a flat high rate harder to sustain. A fading path forces you to answer a better question than “what growth number should I use?”: what changes between now and year ten, and why? The year-by-year table gives that story a numerical shape.

How to find intrinsic value of stock without confusing data with assumptions

Reported EPS is data; normalized EPS is already a judgment; every future growth rate is an assumption. Start with the company's 10-K or 10-Q, use StockAnalysis as a convenient navigation aid, reconcile unusual figures to the filing, and write down why the first and final growth rates are plausible. Then test a range. The calculator cannot decide business quality or forecast durability for you.

When this stock valuation calculator is the wrong model

Do not use the Graham result for a loss-making company, a business whose EPS is dominated by one-offs, or a case where cash generation differs materially from accounting earnings. It also ignores debt, excess cash, dilution, capital intensity, and terminal economics. Those are signs to use a DCF or another business-specific valuation method.

Worked intrinsic-value example

The default case is reproducible from the visible inputs and formula. Change one assumption at a time to see which belief controls the answer.

  • Start with EPS of $5.00. Forecast growth fading evenly from 12% in year 1 to 5% in year 10.
  • Follow the path. Compounding those ten annual assumptions produces year-10 EPS of about $11.28 and an equivalent annual growth rate of about 8.48%.
  • Run Graham's original shortcut. $5.00 × (8.5 + 2 × 8.48) produces roughly $127.27 per share before the bond adjustment.
  • Adjust for rates. Using FRED's June 2026 Aaa yield of 5.52%, multiply by 4.4 ÷ 5.52 to reach about $101.45 per share.
  • Leave room for error. A 25% margin of safety lowers the comparison price to about $76.09. That is arithmetic from the assumptions, not a recommendation.

Meaning

What is the intrinsic value meaning for a stock?

It is an estimate of what a share of the underlying business is economically worth based on assumptions about future earnings or cash flows, time, and risk. It is not the current market price and cannot be observed directly.

What is the intrinsic value of a share?

It is the estimated business value allocated to one share. This page works per share from the start by using earnings per share, so the output can be compared with a quoted share price without a separate share-count calculation.

Does a stock have one correct intrinsic value?

No. Intrinsic value is model-dependent. Change the earnings base, growth path, interest rate, cash conversion, or risk assumption and the estimate changes. A useful valuation shows that sensitivity instead of hiding it.

What is the difference between intrinsic value and market price?

Market price is the amount buyers and sellers agree on now. Intrinsic value is an estimate produced from business assumptions. Price is observable; value is reasoned and uncertain.

Is intrinsic value the same as fair value?

The terms are often used loosely as synonyms, but fair value can also have a specific accounting meaning. This page avoids claiming a definitive fair value and labels its output as a Graham estimate from your assumptions.

Which EPS should I enter?

Positive diluted trailing-twelve-month or latest annual EPS is a practical starting point. If that period contains a material one-off or sits at a cyclical extreme, normalize it transparently before entering it and document why.

Where can I find earnings per share?

A company's income statement reports EPS. Start with the filed 10-K or 10-Q; StockAnalysis can help locate a company's financial pages, but reconcile any convenient data source with the filing and footnotes.

How should I forecast EPS growth?

Begin with business drivers such as revenue growth, margins, reinvestment, buybacks or dilution, and competitive durability. Choose a first-year rate and a more mature final-year rate, then inspect whether each projected year is plausible.

Why does the calculator fade the growth rate?

Holding a high rate constant for a decade often ignores competition, market saturation, capital needs, and the law of large numbers. A fade does not guarantee realism, but it makes maturation explicit.

Why is the forecast limited to seven to ten years?

Graham described g as expected annual growth over roughly seven to ten years. Staying inside that horizon makes the use of his shortcut clearer and avoids pretending that a simple fade can forecast indefinitely.

Which bond yield should I use?

Use the current Moody's Seasoned Aaa Corporate Bond Yield shown by FRED if you want the conventional revised Graham formula. The default is a dated example, so follow the link and update it when the series changes.

What is the Graham intrinsic value formula?

The original shortcut is V = EPS × (8.5 + 2g). The commonly revised version multiplies that result by 4.4 ÷ Y, where Y is the current high-grade corporate bond yield.

How does the growth forecast enter the Graham formula?

The calculator compounds every annual rate to find ending EPS, then calculates the single constant annual rate that reaches the same endpoint. That equivalent annual rate is used as g.

Is this Warren Buffett's intrinsic value formula?

No. Berkshire defines intrinsic value as discounted cash that can be taken out of a business over its remaining life. This page uses Graham's earnings shortcut and links to a DCF for the cash-flow method.

How do Graham and Warren Buffett think about intrinsic value differently?

Graham emphasized paying less than a conservatively estimated value and leaving a margin of safety. Buffett retained that discipline while emphasizing the present value of future distributable cash and the quality of reinvestment.

How does a DCF calculate intrinsic value?

A discounted cash-flow model forecasts cash flows, discounts each one to today, estimates value beyond the explicit forecast, adjusts for balance-sheet claims, and divides equity value by shares. It exposes more assumptions than Graham's shortcut.

Is DCF better than the Graham formula?

DCF is usually the more complete framework when cash flow can be estimated, but it can still produce false precision. Graham's formula is faster and easier to audit; DCF is more capable and more demanding.

What is a margin of safety?

It is a gap between an estimated value and the price paid, intended to leave room for analytical error and unfavorable outcomes. This calculator applies the percentage you choose; it does not prescribe a universal margin.

Limits and privacy

What do the low and high cases mean?

They shift every annual growth assumption down or up by two percentage points and rerun the same formula. They are mechanical sensitivity cases, not probabilities, forecasts, or statistical confidence intervals.

Can I use this calculator for a company with negative EPS?

No. Graham's earnings multiplier is not meaningful with negative earnings. Use a model suited to the company's economics and do not force a positive output from a formula whose required input is absent.

How accurate is an intrinsic value calculator?

Its arithmetic can be exact while its economic estimate is wrong. Accuracy depends primarily on the normalized starting figure and future assumptions, which no browser calculator can verify.

Can I save or share my stock valuation?

Yes. Copy link stores the input values in the URL so the same case opens again. CalcStocks does not persist the values, but anyone receiving the URL can read them.
